The Wonders of Chicago
Chicago, the Windy City, is the largest city in Illinois and
the Midwest, and the third largest in the United States. It sits next to Lake Michigan and the metro
area encompasses 3 states with a population of more than 9.5
million people. Chicago offers breathtaking
architecture and amazing museums, most notably the Museum of
Natural History.
Chicago is ranked fifth "Most Fun U.S City" in a survey
in 2003 by Cranium Inc. Factors considered
in the ranking include: number of sports teams, restaurants,
dance performances, toy stores, the portion
of a city's budget spent on recreation, and other factors. After the great fire of
1871, where a third of the city burned, Chicago rebuilt, which
led to the largest building boom this country had ever seen.
While over one-third of the people live along the waterfront,
many visitors and residents enjoy the nightlife, walks, parks
and scenery along it.
The city boasts many ethnic
restaurants including Mexican, Greek, Italian, Chinese,
Vietnamese and Indian/Pakistani. The cuisine reflects the many
diverse nationalities based on the working class roots of the
citizens that have occupied the city. Chicago boasts about its
deep dish pizza as well as the original thin crust that it is
famous for. The Taste of Chicago,
the largest food festival in the world runs from the
end of June through
July 4th weekend and is the end of the
grand tour of the city's cuisine. It has
evolved into one the world's best restaurant cities.
The city has many
theatres including modern improvisational, Broadway-style and
historical stories. It also has a wide range of musical
venues; with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra being one of the
finest in the world. Also included are jazz, blues,
gospel, soul and has been a rave center since the 1980's. It is
home to the Joffrey ballet and has the Chicago Festival ballet;
which offer many concerts.
Two of the finest zoos in America are located in the area and
are highly recommended. One, on the north side is Lincoln Park
Zoo, which is a free zoo open every day of the year. While one
of the oldest zoos in the country, it is also one of the most
modern. Brookfield Zoo, in Brookfield, just west of Chicago, is
sits on 216 acres of majestically landscaped grounds, showcasing
over 2,000 animals.

Tours in Chicago
In 2006, Chicago attracted more than 44 million visitors from
around the world. High end shopping, a multitude of restaurants,
and impressive architecture lure people from everywhere
and every age. Chicago is the nation's third largest
convention destination. The Chicago Cultural Center was once
the library, but now houses galleries, and exhibit halls. One
is the Preston Bradley Hall that houses a 38 foot Tiffany glass
dome. In 1998, Chicago opened the Museum Campus that includes
a 10 acre site with 3 magnificent museums; the Adler Planetarium,
the Field Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium, which is home to the world's largest indoor
aquarium with over 8000 aquatic animals from over 700 species.
In 1837, when the city incorporated, the motto "Urbs in
Horto", a Latin phrase translated into "City in a Garden"was
decided upon because of the many parks in the Chicago area. The
Chicago Park District consisting of 552 parks on over 7,300 acres, has
16 historic lagoons, 10 bird and wildlife gardens, 33 sand beaches along Lake Michigan, nine
world-class museums, two conservatories, and Lincoln Park, the largest, has over
20 million visitors each year. The district is the nation's largest
municipal harbor system because of the nine lakefront harbors located within
a few of the parks along the lakefront. Besides the
continuing beautification and renewal projects,
new parks have been added in recent years.
